[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Writing West Midlands is looking for individuals who would like to volunteer as an Assistant Writer to work with one of their Young Writers’ Groups in Staffordshire.
These voluntary roles will involve working alongside a Lead Writer from September 2016 to June 2017, to provide support for a writing group such as helping with mentoring and assisting with creative writing exercises for the children and young people taking part.
They are looking for people who are interested in developing the skills and creativity of children and young people as well enhancing their own workshop leader skills.
Assistant Writers are vital members of the team for the Young Writers’ Groups and will shadow a Lead Writer to learn new skills, with an opportunity for career development.
STAFFORDSHIRE OPPORTUNITIES
In Staffordshire they currently have opportunities available in Burton-upon-Trent, Stoke-on-Trent, Wolverhampton and Walsall. They look to work with people who currently live in or near to these areas.
The roles are voluntary, but modest travel expenses and other expenses like parking are covered.
SKILLS REQUIRED
You will need to:
- Be outgoing, practical, enthusiastic with excellent communication skills and a genuine interest in working with children and young people, literature and literature development.
- Have a professional manner and be willing to learn.
- Be confident working alongside a Lead Writer with a group of children and young people.
- Able to take instruction and guidance but also use their own initiative.
- You will also need to be available to assist at a Young Writers’ Group one Saturday morning or afternoon a month.
About the Young Writers’ Groups
Young Writers’ Groups are creative writing groups for children and young people aged 8 to 16. They are each led by a Lead Writer with an Assistant Writer, and they meet monthly on Saturdays for two hours at various locations throughout the West Midlands.

INFORMATION
To apply please send in your CV along with a short video (two minutes maximum) of yourself explaining why you would like to be an Assistant Writer. This can be recorded on a phone or webcam, quality isn’t important.
You can email your video file as an attachment, or via Dropbox, Mail Bigfile, Youtube, Vimeo or any other file sharing site.
Please send your CV and video to joanne@writingwestmidlands.org by Monday 4th April stating which group you are interested in and which interview date is best for you.
Interview days will be held on the following dates:
Wednesday 6th April, 10am – 2pm
Monday 11th April, 9 – 10.30am
Wednesday 13th April, 2 – 5.30pm
Friday 15th April, 10am – 1pm

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Successful applicants are required to read and sign up to a Code of Conduct and Child Protection Policy. Assistant Writers may be required to apply for a DBS check. All Assistant Writers will also need to provide two referees.
