Peter Rice was one of the preeminent stage and costume designers in modern British opera and theatre. His name was synonymous with the the highest calibre of stage design and production, in commercial and subsidised theatre alike. And although it was not unusual for a designer to take charge of both sets and costumes, Rice was unusually successful at both and his lavish and atmospheric work graced Opera Holland Park, the Royal Ballet, the Royal Opera House and many West End theatre. He passed away aged 87 in December 2015

The session will explore his most exciting and innovative works during his lifetime, in the context of the history and practice of theatre design.

The discussion panel will consist of Tom Hawkes (internationally recognised theatre and opera director: Sadler’s Wells, English National Opera, Opera Holland Park), Lis Evans (resident designer, New Vic Theatre), Kate Burnett (Nottingham Trent University, leading theatre design historian), Michael Holt (stage designer for Alan Ayckbourn at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough; and for ‘The Woman in Black’).

The discussion will be chaired by author, designer and artist Matthew Rice, son of Peter Rice, and who is also married to Staffordshire pottery queen Emma Bridgwater.
