[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The annual Tamworth Hastilow Drama Festival provides an opportunity to enjoy a week of theatre for one very low ticket price.
This one act play festival for 2017 is taking place from 22-26 March at Two Rivers School Theatre and sees both youth and adult groups show off their talent
Three plays are performed each evening followed by adjudication from Guild of Drama Adjudicators adjudicator Nick Wilkes. The Festival provides groups the opportunity to enter the celebrated All England Theatre Festival.
ALL ABOUT THE TAMWORTH HASTILOW FESTIVAL
The Hastilow Drama Festival which has been run annually in Staffordshire for around ten years at Tamworth Assembly Rooms, but like last year will instead be staged at the new venue of Two Rivers School, while the Assembly Rooms undergoes continuing rennovation. The festival itself is named after hardcore patrons of the Tamworth Arts scene Joan and Gerry Hastilow.
The Hastilow Festival acts as a first round that feeds into the All England Theatre Festival, which has been running annually in the UK for some 80 years, and is England’s only country wide festival of its kind. So there’s a real competitive element to the proceedings which gives it an extra edge.
THEMS THE RULES
The rules are staggeringly strict; plays must be amateur productions of only one act, with a minimum of 2 speaking parts and a duration of between 20 and 55 minutes. It must take no more than 10 minutes to build or strike the set. There are penalty marks for over or under time on performance, and disqualification for running over or under time by 5 minutes or more on either the performance or the set and strike times.
The plays are adjudicated according to the following percentages; Stage Presentation 15%, Direction 35%, Acting 40%, Dramatic Achievement 10%.

BEHIND THE SCENES
There is a really detailed and entertaining blog post about last years (2016) festival here, written by the Tamworth Assembly Room theatre technicans. Having read it a few times through, here at Staffordshire Theatre we can’t help buy think that this festival, and the various groups preparations for it, would make a fascinating fly-on-the-wall documentary. We’d be happy to do it next year if anyone wants to get in touch
