[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]A fearless new show about what it means to stand up, stand out and stand alone is about to set Burton upon Trent’s Brewhouse Arts Centre on fire. So put your drinks down and your hands together, all the way from Domremy in France, via Sheffield and 600 years, it’s JOAN!
What happens when a disguise soon becomes something a lot more real, and you have to fight for who you really are?
This clever retelling has comic fizz, emotional ballast and cross-dressing that looks like sorcery. The Guardian
Joan fuses lyrical new theatre writing with drag king cabaret for the very first time, in an earthy story of courage, conviction, hope, survival and love, this is Joan of Arc: inspiring military leader, ultimate female icon and, quite possibly, the world’s first drag king.
WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Written by Lucy Skilbeck, part cabaret, part performance, it tells the incredible story of Joan of Arc and her travels through France and the events leading up to her demise, including her decision to look more like a man, all the battles, and her trial.
A highly intelligent piece of theatre, that swings from one perfectly executed mood to another
Performed by Drag Idol Champion, Lucy Jane Parkinson, with a tour de force performance packed with guts and a lot of heart.
On the question of what Lucy hopes audiences will get from this production, she says:
“It would be nice if the audience leaves with an open-minded perspective on how difficult it can be to be who you truly are, and not what people expect you to be or tell you to be. I hope they can find strength within themself, and that that is a liberating factor in their life.
I found it really difficult to come to terms with who I was, and why I didn’t fit into these social ideologies, so if they take away a bit of a fresh perspective on that through this story, that would be really great”
PAY WHAT YOU CAN
This is a ‘Pay What You Think The Show Is Worth’ performance, which is a wonderful way to try out new theatre, and you can pay whatever you feel the perfomance was worth to you after seeing it.
Joan is directed by Lucy J Skilbeck, Derby Theatre’s BBC Performing Arts Fellow 2014, and is a a Derby Theatre Production made in association with Milk Presents.
The play comes to Burton Brewhouse Arts Centre on 6 May 2016
