[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The grounds of Stafford Castle are this summer transformed into the piazzas of Venice and the stunning beachfront setting of an unsetlled Cyprus of the 1950s, just as conflict is about to erupt.
Othello, being staged as part of the annual and widely anticipated Stafford Festival Shakespeare, marks a bold move for the creative team behind previous successes at the castle. This time bringing one of Shakespeare’s darker and grittier pieces to Staffordshire audiences.
However, this isn’t all doom and gloom – this powerful tragedy is given a modern and accesible feel by the new creative team assembled by local Staffordshire producer Derrick Gask, directed by Clare Prenton, and acccented by the the emerging rock and roll sounds of the mid fifties, played live throughout the show.
WHAT’S IT ABOUT
The powerful story of jealousy, revenge, paranoia and personal destruction, focusses on military man Othello.
In love and newlywed, the respected army general becomes the target of jealous comrade Lago, hellbent on cruely twisting his mind against everything he loves and ultimately himself.
WHO’S IN IT?
This website is a big fan of supporting great Staffordshire theatre, which isn’t reliant on star names. Here a brilliant cast of incredible actors and musicans has been assembled, including Oliver Wilson, Niall Costigan, Madeleine Leslay, James Lawrence, Molly Gromadzki, Hester Arden, Howard Chadwick, TJ Holmes, Nathan Turner, George Johnston, Katy Sobey, Jamie Noar, Thomas Wolstenholme and Reece Richardson.
SHOUD YOU SEE IT?
Yes, yes, yes. Although certainly a change from the lighter comedies that are normally programmed for the Festival Shakespeare event at Stafford Castle, this tragedy is a MUST SEE, and staged in such an imaginative way with such strong performances, you really shouldn’t miss it.
Othello plays at Stafford Castle from 23rd June – Saturday 9th July 2016.
