New Theatre Writing Celebrated in Staffordshire Libraries
Libraries have many roles to play in our communities here in Staffordshire, and under ever increasing financial and resource pressures. So it is more than excellent to see that Staffordshire Libraries and Newcastle Under Lyme Library are supporting professional new theatre writing, and will be hosting Lightning under their Skirts a brand new play on 17 May 2017 written by former Cheshire Poet Laureate JOY WINKLER.
It’s 1961. Gary wants to borrow a few bob off his sister Sandy to go dancing at the Town Baths.
He wants her to iron his trousers because no one pits a crease in them like she does.
He wants Keith’s bird as well – and that’s where the trouble starts.
Produced in association with the brilliant Action Transport Theatre and directed by Kevin Dyer (who himself wrote the brilliant The Iranian Feast) this beautiful and funny new play promises to be full of secrets and poetry, and all about the monochrome 1950’s being shoved aside and replaced by a bright new world.
The show is performed by Winkler, along with Josie Cerise ( ‘Grandpa in my Pocket’ on CBeebies) and Harvey Robinson.
Tickets are only £7 !!!! – (we will say that again, £7 for a brand new professional play !!!! Where else can you see new theatre locally at this price!!!).
Available from Newcastle Library on 01782 297332 or email newcastle.library@staffordshire.gov.uk
The play recommended for 11+
This event is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England
Let’s hope this is the start of much more new theatre being staged in our libraries across #Staffordshire. More please!

ABOUT LIGHTNING UNDER THEIR SKIRTS
Joy Winkler’s new play —
It’s 1961. Gary wants to borrow a few bob off his sister Sandy to go dancing at the Town Baths.

Written by Joy Winkler with award-winning director Kevin Dyer, this beautiful and funny play full of secrets and poetry is about the monochrome 1950’s being shoved aside and replaced by a bright new world.
