Featuring an impressive cast and accompanied by a large live Orchestra with over 30 musicians, The Russian State Ballet and Opera House returns to Staffordshire with another popular ballet. This time the romantic and mysterious Swan Lake.
‘A princess turned into a swan by an evil curse… Will Prince Siegfried’s love prove strong enough to save her? A superb performance which lived up to the mystery of the Russian classic’
The perfect romantic ballet of all time performed to Tchaikovsky’s haunting and unforgettable score. From the impressive splendour of the palace ballroom to the moonlit lake where swans glide in perfect formation, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all.
THE STORY OF SWAN LAKE
The story of Swan Lake is woven around two girls, Odette and Odile who resemble each other so closely they can easily be mistaken for the other.
Prince Siegfried immediately falls in love with the White Swan princess, Odette (a swan by day but a young lady at night). However, Odette is under a magic spell and can only be saved by a man who declares her as his first and only love. Once this promise is made, she can be set free.
He promises his eternal love to Odette but unfortunately he is tricked by Von Rothbart, who casts a spell to make him fall in love with his daughter, Princess Odile (also known as the Black Swan), who closely resembles his love Princess Odette. Under a spell and mesmerised by her beauty, the prince forgets Odette and promises his love to Odile.
Swan Lake captures, like no other, the full range of human emotions – from hope to despair, from terror to tenderness, from melancholy to ecstasy.
Swan Lake is arguably one of the most loved and challenging ballets, not least thanks to Tchaikovsky’s instantly recognisable and timeless score, but also the great ‘Pas de Deux’, ‘Pas de Quatre’ and iconic ‘Danse des Petits Cygnes’.
