THE BARD’S BEST BITS TO BE PERFORMED IN BURTON

Burton Library is celebrating Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary year with a special abridged performance of one of the Bard’s most famous plays.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Burton Library is celebrating Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary year with a special abridged performance of one of the Bard’s most famous plays.

Oddsocks Productions will be performing a 90-minute version of Romeo and Juliet on Saturday 22 October at 3pm in Burton Library.  Billed as the ‘Bard’s Best Bits’, the show aims to entertain family audiences with a comedy adaptation of the star-crossed lovers’ iconic story.

The Oddsocks tour is part of the national Celebrating Shakespeare 2016 campaign.  Run by the Society of Chief Librarians and its partners, the project aims to introduce younger children to Shakespeare in a fun way, to interest teenagers in a playwright who was edgy and daring in his day, and encourage adults to revisit his works with a fresh eye.

Gill Heath, Staffordshire County Council’s Libraries Chief said:

“The show will give people of all ages a real flavor of one of the Bard’s most famous plays. Attracting these kinds of events proves how libraries can deliver creative and arts-based activities in local communities that help to get more people into the arts and reading.”

Oddsocks Productions, now in their 27th year, and well known for their annual tours of open-air performances across the UK, said:

“We are delighted to be working with libraries across the West Midlands to celebrate Shakespeare this October.  We can’t wait to shake up Shakespeare and bring you our comedy Romeo and Juliet.”

ABOUT CELEBRATE SHAKESPEARE 2016

Throughout 2016 the world will commemorate 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare.  Many of Britain’s cultural institutions have been paying tribute to the Bard’s life and works. It promises to be an impressively imaginative programme.

The UK Library Network has been awarded a £95,000 arts council grant to Celebrate Shakespeare throughout 2016

The Arts Council grant has allowed substantial funding for high-quality artists to work across the library network, celebrating the 400th anniversary of England’s most famous writer.

As well as a nationwide special week of celebrations that took place to coincide with the worldwide celebrations of Shakespeares 400th anniversary in spring 2016, the rest of the grant is being spent on the procurement of artists, writers and performers to work with libraries on Shakespeare events and activities for children, young people and adults, taking place between May and the end of October 2016.

You can find out much more about the wider library Shakespeare programme at at the official Celebrate Shakespeare 2016 website
